Tower Condo and Spring Skiing

On Saturday, March 24th, we hopped in the car after work and drove up to Yongpyong, our usual winter destination. While Seoul at that time was starting to feel slightly warmer, Hoenggye, the town at the base of Yongpyeong still had plenty of snow to be had. Another storm had just dropped more snow in the area the day before and we were looking forward to an amazing day of skiing on Sunday.

When the ski season is still in full swing, booking condos at the resort can be difficult. And expensive of course. Fortunately, we (ahm, aka the boyfriend) bought a condo membership this year, so a night at any of the condos around the resort starts at 70,000 a night instead of around 200,000 per night. So, that took care of the cost. Booking, especially last minute tends to be difficult, but since it was the end of the year we were able to call on the way there and get a room in Tower Condo.

Tower Condo

As the olympics are coming in the next few years, I've been trying to document every place to stay around Yongpyong. So, here's what a basic room in Tower Condo looks like. This is, of course, an ondol room which means there's no bed, just floor mats. Nowadays I sleep on the floor more often than in my own bed so this is nothing strange to me.

There is a small kitchen with an electric stove with two burners. Unfortunately the sink was seriously blocked which made cooking our spagetti dinner a little difficult.

Bathroom in Tower Condo

The bathroom was nice. No tub in this condo, but it had a nice big shower stall. To see other Yongpyong accomodations, along with other info about Yongpyong, click here.

And as for the skiing? It was great, of course, just like it was at this time last year. Spring skiing in Yongpyeong is usually great! We skied the whole day in beautiful powdery conditions.

  1. Oh, good thing you and your boyfriend availed of the membership in advance! See, you got some membership discounts and privileges. Isn’t the place selling the units, too? It would be a nice place to stay since it’s near many skiing spots! Would you consider living there whenever you get the chance?

  2. As far as I know, tower condo doesn't have any units for sale. Our friend does have his own condo at Yongpyong, though not at tower condo. The basic price for the condo isn't bad, but because all the condos are fully serviced the yearly management fees can be quite high. I think the price to purchase the condo is 100,000,000 won (100,000 USD) but he needs to pay about 8 Million won a year in management fees. We visited another owned condo in a much nicer part of Yongpyong... a luxury condo. I don't know how much the price to buy is, but i know it's about 25 million a year in management fees!

  4. Hi, me and my family are going to Seoul on 2nd Dec. I've tried to book in Dragon Valley Hotel and Tower Condominium but all are full. Do you have any suggestion where to stay in Yongpyong Resort? Thank you. Regards, nova.

  5. Hi! great blog! :):)

I want to visit to Alpensia/YP from 25-27 march as i hv never seen snow before, but the local agent said that the ski resorts are all closed and that there was no snow :(

So i'm really supprised to read that you went skiing in YP on 24th Mar last year!

Based on your previous experience, do you think that snow is impossible, during end march this year?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

  6. Jessy,
There is usually still snow in March. Last year the snow was still pretty good at the end of March. Actually, at the top, the snow conditions are excellent, but near the bottom they can be quite slushy. Anyway, as a beginner skiier, this won't bother you too much and if you're an advanced skiier, you can just ski up at the top and avoid the bottom. The biggest problem is for intermediate skiiers because they have some skiing skills, but need to stay near the bottom.

Anyway, I would recommend coming to Yongpyong (not sure about Alpensia) at the end of March. It is much cheaper to ski then too, since it's off-season.
